The Funny Thing About 'Crime'

2 min read

This week, I want to share with you a funny story.

It was at LEAAAASSTTTT 10 years ago. But I remember it like it was only 9.5 years ago...I mean, yesterday. Because of one thing. Humour.

I was with my grandfather, who we called Pop, at our local hardware store.

I don't remember what we were getting. Paint? Bolts maybe? Maybe it was sandpaper?

We were being served by a lady who was straight to the point. Almost robot-like efficiency.

After she helped us find what we wanted, the time came to pay. My Pop had a account at the store he'd pay at the end of the month. All the lady needed was his name to locate the account.

"Name?" She asked.

Pop replied,

"Crime"

I was confused.

She was confused.

Has anybody's answer to a question ever created EVEN MORE questions!?

Pop repeated himself.

"Crime"

Still a pause.....

I had no idea what was going on. I've never actually seen anybody drop a pin but if they had, you would've been able to hear it!

Then Pop followed up with,

"Crime doesn't pay"

Paint brush drop moment right there

Did the lady serving us laugh? Not really. But from that moment, I learnt three things.

1) Crime doesn't pay.

2) My Pop's funny!

3) It's the mindset of trying to make someone laugh that's more important than if it does or not.

Humour lightens the mood of any moment - either for the person we're trying to cheer up, or ourselves! (hopefully both).  And even the person behind you Daniel .....who will recall the dialogue 10+ years later!
